Having secured an additional 30000 sq ft of space on Westcott Venture Park, Ecopac has launched contract packing and internet fulfilment services.

Operations Manager, Stuart Carroll who is overseeing this new development reported “a number of customers have asked us about this service in the past but the business was limited to what it could take on due to space constraints. Now we have the new building we are deliberately keeping the main packing hall as a flexible space that we can kit out to suit the individual requirements of each job as it comes along”.

To ensure the quality of work Ecopac has taken the unusual step of directly employing a team of picker packers rather than using temp labour. Stuart justified this tactic saying “temporary labour can be a problem with temps not showing up on the day or not really caring about the work that they do – knowing they could be somewhere else tomorrow. We have employed a number of local people on flexible term contracts so that we can build a team around each job that comes in. The same people are working for us week after week so they get to know our business and our customers. That way they care about the quality of the work they do.”

“We are able to be flexible with their hours making it ideal work for parents that need to manage work commitments alongside child care requirements etc.”

With contracts so far ranging from packing out retailers point of sale displays to putting pens onto backing cards, this new service is typical of Ecopac’s approach to business – it’s flexible and fits around the needs of customers.

Described by MD Doug Sparkes as a major step in the development of the business, Ecopac has entered into a strategic partnership with Chinese manufacturing group Winsun.

With headquarters in Ningboin the east of China, Winsun has metal, wood and plastic processing plants as well as a cooperating network of over thirty other manufacturing factories across China.

Winsun will provide a sourcing option for Ecopac for products including; adhesive tapes, stretch wrap films, decorative paper bags, litho-laminated corrugated, ropes and twines, plastic garment hangers, polythene bags and furniture covers.

Ecopac realised the need to establish a presence in China following repeated price increase demands from UK based manufacturers and set about looking for a partner towards the end of 2010. Following visits to over thirty factories owned by more than twenty different businesses, Ecopac selected Winsun as their partner as they were impressed by the management and quality of the organisation. Commercial manager John Bennett stated “The team at Winsun demonstrated a real desire to do business with us. From our first meeting they responded positively to our requests and their products are of excellent quality. We now have a dedicated sourcing team within the Winsun business and anything that we need that they don’t manufacture they will source on our behalf and provide quality management and testing for us.”

Winsun General Manager Bob Lai is delighted with the partnership with Ecopac commenting, “Ecopac share a vision with Winsun. We are both rapidly growing businesses that are focused on providing the very best quality products at competitive prices to our customers”.

Building H1, which sits opposite the main Ecopac building has quite a history. Originally used as a munitions store at the end of the second world war, the building has since been used as a bullion store and as well as a luxury car garage for the Harrods empire. Now under the control of Ecopac the building will be used for the company’s growing contract packing operations as well as housing Ecopac’s bubble wrap converting machines.

MD Doug Sparkes explained, “despite moving into our current premises at Westcott only 30 months ago, the growth that the business has experienced has already left us tight for capacity. The availability of H1 building is proving an ideal solution as it enables us to separate the contract packing, production, waste management and internet fulfilment areas of our business from the general packaging warehousing.”

Ecopac, the packaging design and logistics business has increased its delivery capacity by adding two new Scania 18 tonne lorries to its fleet, and to ensure it stands out from the crowd the vehicles have been decked out with a stunning livery carrying the company’s ‘packaging shouldn’t cost the earth’ statement.

The new lorries, the first 18 tonne capacity vehicles in the Ecopac fleet will be used to deliver packaging nationwide to Ecopac’s ever growing customer base. Driver Michael Winterbourne has been assigned to one of the new trucks and is delighted with it. “ I’ve noticed that the lorry is certainly a head turner as I drive it around the country. It’s great to see the company continuing to grow and invest during these difficult economic times”.

Response to the new livery has been so positive that the rest of the Ecopac fleet is now being updated to match the new lorry. Commercial Manager John Bennett outlined the reason behind the investment, “at Ecopac we’re really serious about our commitment to reduce both the environmental and cost impact of packaging.

Ecopac (UK) Ltd, the Buckinghamshire based packaging design and logistics business has gained a license to handle third party cardboard and polythene waste and process it back into the recycling chain.

The license enables Ecopac to collect waste packaging from customers at the same time as making deliveries. The waste is then taken back to the Westcott plant where it is sorted and baled before being fed back into the recycling chain.

Ecopac operations managerStuart Carrollcommented “it’s a win win situation for our customers. It enables them to responsibly get rid of their waste packaging whilst at the same time removing the cost of doing so – the savings can be substantial. As we back load the waste when we are delivering new products we are also reducing the number of road journeys needed to get the waste back into the recycling chain”.

Large collection stillages are issued free of charge to customers to be used for the collation of waste end these are replaced with recycled empty ones when the full ones are collected.

Packaging solutions business Ecopac has extended its product range by investing in two mini roll bubble wrap machines.

The machines, which have been installed at the companies new contract packing plant in Westcott, Buckinghamshire convert 600m maxi rolls into specific mini roll lengths – from 5 to 50m. The mini rolls are then over-bagged and labelled on line before being heat sealed.

Marketing Executive Nathalie Fornalcyzk enthused about the new capacity saying, “we believe that the market for mini rolls is strong and rapidly growing. Bringing this capacity in house enables us to establish a strong presence in this sector. We already have a strong order book for these products, across a range of sizes and we are now seeking new opportunities to build this range further.”

The machines convert both standard and bio-degradable bubble wrap and also roll foam products.
